Not that there was ever much doubt, but one of the most exciting things about Phoebe Bridgers' comeback single, "Lost Boys," is that it dispels any lingering question that she is a generational talent. Oh yeah—the song is a revelation, too. "Lost boys, never grow up, never go home. / Lost boys, never spend their lunch money," Bridgers croons in her familiar silky-smooth delivery over an arrangement that constantly surprises. The song's final coda blossoms into a towering orchestral crescendo, recalling the seismic finale of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" or the sweeping, intricately layered musical overtures Brian Wilson spent his career perfecting.

Bridgers is joined by a cast of friends and collaborators, including boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, producer Jack Antonoff, Blake Mills on synths, and Alex G on drums, among others. By the time she counts off a triumphant "One, two, three!" in the song's closing moments, Bridgers firmly establishes herself alongside Bruce Springsteen, Annie Clark, and MJ Lenderman as one of rock and roll's most vital modern standard-bearers. Bridgers also released the music video for "Lost Boys," which finds her clad in an Elvish dress and pointed ears, embarking on an American Middle-earth odyssey through parking lots, hibachi restaurants, and forests ablaze with disco balls, joined by knights, witches, wizards, and fish people, alike. "Lost Boys," is at once Phoebe Bridgers most confident and most important to date, a celebratory treatise on life, love, and the promise of rock and roll.
