“He Loves Me Yeah!” is not the most sophisticated song on Faye Webster’s superb fifth album, Underdressed at the Symphony. “My baby loves me, yeah, he loves me, yeah,” Webster sings over and over, interlaced with verses about her baby doing mundane tasks like pumping her gas and brushing her hair. But on “He Loves Me Yeah!” sophistication is not the point.
Nels Cline of Wilco provides “He Loves Me Yeah!” with a chugging along guitar pulse akin to “Hip To Be Square” by Huey Lewis & The News or “I Love LA” by Randy Newman, making “He Loves Me Yeah!” more like these great tracks of the dad rock era, then the laid back improvisational flavored songs on the rest of Underdressed at the Symphony.
“He Loves Me Yeah!” amounts to a just under three-minute classic rock track with each casually delivered, “Yeah!” bolstered by an electrified double track of Webster’s voice.
While Underdressed at the Symphony features some of Webster’s longest songs to date, “He Loves Me Yeah!” is another fitting example of her ability to create infectious, short, and sweet pop songs - “Cheers” from Webster’s fourth album, I Know I'm Funny Haha was easily the best track of 2021. “I think we’re perfect, yeah we’re perfect, yeah!” Webster sings as “He Loves Me Yeah!” comes to a close. “He Loves Me Yeah!” certainly is.
